The learning material and contents provided by the AltanaESP Network & System, frequently make use of terms and concepts that aren't all that familiar to most people. This glossary - AltanaESP Terms and Concepts - is a collection of the constructs (i.e. words, terms & concepts) often used in AltanaESP materials and content. This glossary act as a source of reference to enhance the contextual meaning and understanding of these "odd" terms and concepts. Words and/or phrases hold different meanings for each person. Therefore, it is a sensible idea to "define" the constructs used and to "place every body on the same page" when dealing with such constructs. You, the reader - most likely - have quite a different definition for, understanding of or perspective regarding such constructs... and that is fine! However, within the Altana... Electronic Support Platform (i.e. Network and System), the various terms, concepts and implications are quite specific and contextual.

Therefore, each word, term or concept - included in this glossary - serve as a "resources tool" to promote understanding and context when dealing with or exploring AltanaESP materials and contents.

Rest In Peace common sense... dear old friend.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, COMMON SENSE, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth record were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be well remembered as having cultivate valuable lessons such as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't fair and maybe it was my own fault.

Common sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations was set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouth wash after lunch and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student... only worsened his condition.

Common sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves, failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

His health declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student falls pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common sense lost the WILL to live as the churches became profitable businesses and clubs with exclusive membership; and criminals receive better and more humane treatment then their victims.

Common sense took a severe beating when you cannot defend yourself against a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault, if you should defend yourself and harm comes to the burglar.

Common sense finally give up the WILL to live, after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. He suffocated further, when a man throws a boomerang, hit himself on the head and sue himself for gross negligence... and win the case.

Common sense was preceded in death, by his parents TRUTH and TRUST; his wife, DISCRETION; by his daughter, RESPONSIBILITY and by his son, REASON.

He is survived by his five stepbrothers... "I know my rights"; "I want it now"; "Someone else is to blame"; "You owe me" and "I am the victim here".

Not many at tented his funeral, because so few people actually realised that he was gone.

Occult is - despite the popularised demonic interpretation by most people - in actual fact a concept which describe...
  • something as being concealed or hidden from view or have its light extinguished.
  • having an import not apparent to our senses nor obvious to our intelligence, beyond ordinary understanding.
  • events that are hidden and difficult to "see" or "observe".
key Thus, the presence of the concept occult can be ascribe to the fact that we do not understand... yet!

Therefore, occult cannot really be credited with either the presence or absence of demonic and satanic forces. However, we could when we choose to do so; but the concept occult is much closer related to the recent chaos theory.

Open source - in general - refers to any program whose original or source code is made available for use or modification as users or other developers see fit. Open source programs is usually developed as a public collaboration, made freely available and shared without any reservations. To summarize, the open source definition model of distribution terms require that...
  • The programs being distributed must be redistributed to anyone else without any restriction or limitations of use.
  • The original or source code must be made available so that the receiving party would be able to improve or modify it to suit his/her circumstances the best.
  • The license could require that improved versions of the program should carry a different name or version from the original program.
Key OPEN SOURCE = contribution (i.e. personal responsibility) and sharing (i.e. group accountability).

Let's put aside a few minutes to shed some light on the topic of open source software and explain why it isn't such a big risk as many people tend to think. The primary benefit of open source software is that it gives us control over the technology that we are using. The best analogy that illustrates this benefit, is with the way and why we buy a car.

Ask yourself the following question... "Would you ever buy a car with the hood welded shut?" Of course not, that would be stupid! But, hang on a minute... "What do we actually know about modern internal-combustion engines?" There is a good chance that we - along with 99% of the general population - don't know much about it at all. Yet, we demand the ability to open the hood of our car, because it gives us some CONTROL over the product that we acquire.

See, we can take the car back to the dealer and if they do a good job, don't overcharge us and add the features we need, we keep taking it back to that dealer. But if they overcharge us, won't fix the problem we are having, or refuse to install the air-conditioner we always wanted... well, there are plenty of other mechanics that would be happy to have our business... providing that they can get under the hood of the car.

In the proprietary software industry, we have NO CONTROL over the technology we are using. When the vendor overcharges us, refuses to fix a bug that causes our system to crash, or chooses not to introduce the feature that we need, we have NO choice, but to accept it or acquire another product in it's place, that normally requires the export/import of data and spending many man-hours to rearrange and tweak information.

This lack of control over commercial software frequently results in HIGH COST, LOW RELIABILITY and LOTS of FRUSTRATION. However, open source software (marketed under the GPL licence) leave us with the freedom to use a "mechanic" of our own choosing.

Please go to the System Documentation site for a more detailed explanation of the reasons why AltanaESP Pty Ltd took the decision to primarily follow the open source development route.

Open-house is a learning methodology - strongly advocated and encourage within the AltanaESP Network and System - that allows learners self-determined, independent and interest-guided learning. The essential components of the open-house methodology for learning is directed by the following critical aspects...
  1. What is the purpose or goal of learning... for me personally? (i.e. establish a personal vision statement).
  2. What - for me - are the best ways of achieving this purpose and/or these goals and objectives? (i.e. and accountable personal SWOT-analysis).
  3. Which learning opportunities and material could stimulate me to productively obtain my goal? (i.e. formulate a personal mission statement).
  4. What priorities, meanings and purpose would drive me when I purposefully and actively use the identified learning opportunities and material? (i.e. establish a personal value statement).
Each learner are oblige to formulate and compile his/her own personal curriculum and learning path (i.e. personal PLP) in deliberation and negotiation with a AltanaESP Locksmith of his/her choice. Once a learner's PLP is in place, participation and active contributions to the learning process as a whole is required and assessing successes achieved, are steered or directed by the learner's own PLP (i.e. his/her personal responsibility) within the context of we all learn together (i.e. group accountability).

The open-house learning methodology isn't something radical, new or recently "discovered"; it was and still is - throughout known human history - the manner in which we learn and master the "new" and "unfamiliar" by imitating or modeling our behaviour on that of our "role models". Thus, learning by following examples, keen observation, play and experimentation. This kind of learning methodology are strongly reflected in teaching and training practices such as...
  • Active learning
  • Cooperative learning
  • Experiential education
  • Social learning
  • OBET
  • The thinking curriculum, etc.
Key Learning accompaniment and guidance, through revealing the "unknown" and encourage the establishment of an open-minded inner climate.
