This glossary - AltanaESP Terms and Concepts - is a collection of the constructs (i.e. words, terms & concepts) often used in AltanaESP materials and content. This glossary act as a source of reference to enhance the contextual meaning and understanding of these "odd" terms and concepts. Words and/or phrases hold different meanings for each person. Therefore, it is a sensible idea to "define" the constructs used and to "place every body on the same page" when dealing with such constructs. You, the reader - most likely - have quite a different definition for, understanding of or perspective regarding such constructs... and that is fine! However, within the Altana... Electronic Support Platform (i.e. Network and System), the various terms, concepts and implications are quite specific and contextual.

Awareness can be described as having knowledge of and an state of elementary or undifferentiated consciousness.

Awareness is the first stage in the process of learning about a new product, service, concept, idea or point of view in which we have received information about the existence of the "new", but has not yet formed an opinion.

Awareness is the state or ability to perceive, to feel or to be conscious of events, objects or sensory patterns in our environment. In this level of undifferentiated consciousness, sensed data can be confirmed by us without necessarily implying an understanding. More broadly, awareness is the state or quality of being aware of something. Awareness is regarded as our perception and cognitive reaction (preferably response) to different environmental stimuli, situations, conditions or events.

Awareness is a relative concept. We may be partially aware, may be subconsciously aware or may be acutely aware of an event. Awareness may be focused on either an internal state of mind - such as an intuitive or non-rational feeling - or on external events by way of sensory perception and observables. Thus, within an attenuated system of awareness, our mind's might be aware of much more than is being contemplated in a specific society or group consciousness (i.e. the launching pad of awareness is a curious mind that ask critical questions).

key Therefore, the foundation of awareness is not to fill an empty mind with knowledge and facts but to transform a closed mind into an open mind that dare to ask various uncomfortable questions.


The following thinking patterns tend to lower our levels of awareness and promote close mindedness...
  • Fixed thinking pattern: A thinking pattern that has as its foundation only one "absolute" truth. For example: When we have an argument with someone and just discover that they were right all along; a fixed thinking pattern will encourage us to reason that "I always get it wrong". This thinking pattern reflects a rigid mindset and arrogant stubbornness to digest, learn from our mistakes and to over simplify conclusions, e.g. "I will never get it right, because I am always wrong".
  • Global thinking pattern: This thinking pattern has as its basis sweeping statements. For example: When we meet a blond person for the first time, we tend to ASSUME that "all blonds are stupid" without even considering to change our minds, once we get to know the person better. This thinking pattern reflects and inclination to adopt a global or - differently stated - a collective view, that if one incident proof to be correct (e.g. blonde people are stupid), it stand to reason that all other similar traits or incidents are stupid as well.
  • Grouped thinking pattern: The very core of this thinking pattern lies in an unhealthy locus of control, either externally or internally dominated. For example: You have been told that you did not get a promotion that you applied for, instead the company have appointed an outside candidate. You stand to reason "I am not good enough to get the job, it is all my fault" (unhealthy dominated internal locus of control) or "I am perfect for the job, management are just too short-sighted to spot real potential, it is all their fault" (unhealthy dominated external locus of control). Grouped thinkers have the tendency to either project all blame on others or the tendency to "see" everything as their fault.
The following thinking patterns tend to raise our levels of awareness and promote open mindedness...
  • Flexible thinking pattern: At the root of this thinking pattern lies the courage to question and a willingness to accommodate or to consider the context and dynamics of the situation. For example: When we have an argument with someone and just discover that they were right all along; a flexible thinking pattern will encourage us to reason that "I made a mess of that, but one is never to old to learn". A flexible thinking pattern reflects a willingness to learn (from our mistakes) and acknowledge that each situation is different and that responses could change accordingly.
  • Specific thinking pattern: As its foundation specific thinking patterns deal with each situation or event according to its merits. For example: When we meet a blonde person for the first time, we do not assume that the person is stupid, unless proven otherwise OR we assume the person is less bright, unless proven otherwise. This thinking pattern reflects a realization of the specific nature of things, events, situations or circumstances (e.g. stupidity is a relative concept depending on the person, situation or both).
  • Holistic thinking pattern: At the foundation of the holistic thinking pattern lies acceptance. Accepting that we cannot control everything in life and that some setbacks is just beyond our sphere of control. For example: You have been told that you did not get a promotion that you applied for, instead the company have appointed an outside candidate. You stand to reason "I am not suitable for the position yet, it may be worth the effort to speak to the managers and identify the area(s) in which I could improve myself". Holistic thinking allows us to take many punches in life, but never to surrender to circumstances.
Our thinking patterns - apart from influencing our levels of awareness - also directly impact on our levels of stress. A combination of fixed, global and grouped thinking patterns have the tendency to highlight stressors and boost the levels of stress that we experience every day. On the other hand, a combination of flexible, specific and holistic thinking patterns, tend to reduce the negative impact of stressors, and subsequently lower our levels of stress accordingly.

KEY WHAT WE ARE AWARE OF IS WHAT WE PAY ATTENTION TO! And what we pay attention to, is what manifest in our reality (i.e. umwelt) as the truth.
