Equilibrium implies a "stable mental and psyche dynamics" in which psyche forces cancel one another to obtain a healthy perspective based on higher levels of awareness. Equilibrium is the equality of distribution, a stable situation in which disharmonious forces cancel one another, which allows for a balanced or realistic mindset and outlook on life (i.e. a healthy & Balanced PVC).

Key The term equilibrium also refers to what might be called a "balance of forces".

Mechanical equilibrium is its literal definition. For example... A book sitting on a table top remains at rest because the downward force exerted by the earth's gravity acting on the book's mass (this is what is meant by the "weight" of the book) is exactly balanced by the repulsive force between atoms that prevents two objects from simultaneously occupying the same space; acting - in this case - between the table surface and the book. When we pick up the book and raise it above the table top, the additional upward force exerted by our arm "destroys" the state of equilibrium as the book moves upward. If we wish to hold the book at rest above the table, we adjust the upward force to exactly balance (or match) the weight of the book (i.e. earth's gravity); thus restoring equilibrium on a different level. An object is in a state of mechanical equilibrium when it is either static (motionless) or in a state of unchanging motion. From the physics relation of f = ma, it is apparent that if the net force on the object is zero, its acceleration must also be zero; so if we can see that an object is not undergoing a change in its motion, we know that it is in mechanical equilibrium.

Although sustaining our psyche equilibrium is not as elementary and straightforward as mechanical equilibrium. However, the same PRINCIPLE of "balanced forces" is also applicable. Similar to mechanical equilibrium, psyche equilibrium also is influenced by the very foundation of energy forces which states that...
  • energy cannot be created, nor destroyed; ONLY transformed and
  • uncontrolled energy results in chaos and destruction.
The above implies that in order for us to establish and maintain psyche equilibrium, we have to respect and "cooperate" with the energy "transformation" and "control" principles. We have to channel our psyche energies free from unnecessary obstruction, stuckness and/or blockages. However, doing so, is often much easier said than done; but it is quite possible when we consistently and deliberately make an effort. As the ancient Chinese proverb implies... "The longest and most difficult journey always starts with the first step and once we obtain momentum, the many steps which follow can be surprisingly easy". Although psyche equilibrium is as obvious and logical as mechanical equilibrium; many people still fail to fully understand the implications of psyche equilibrium. To place psyche equilibrium in a more understandable perspective, let's consider the following scenario...

Our stress energies (for example resulting from examinations or tests in a study environment), which frequently surface from a dissonance in our thoughts (for example a believe that non-studying could lead to failure on the one hand and a belief that being unsociable may result in peer group rejection on the other) which cannot be true simultaneously... often blocks or obstruct the free-flow of our learning energies. This energy obstruction occurs when we have to choose between spending an evening studying or participating in some social event. The "answer" to this inner conflict normally is quite obvious (for outsiders e.g. parents), BUT is quite a different ball game from an inner perspective. There are many variables that need to be considered and put into context first, before we can restore our psyche equilibrium. Some variables - in this particular case - that needs to be considered could be...
  • how well is this learning contents mastered?
  • what is the present level of my subject studying effort?
  • when is the test or examination to be written?
  • what other responsibilities do I have?
  • how well prepared and confident am I to be assessed on the material?
  • what is my personal opinion with regards to my level of intelligence?
  • how do my performance compare to that of my fellow students?
  • how many social events did I accept/reject in the past?
  • what is the importance of this social event for me... and for others?
  • how important do I view the other people present at the social event?
  • the implication for peer group acceptance, when I am present or not present at the social event?
  • the significance of the person - for me - which extent the invitation?
  • the "size" of my present circle of friends?
  • which serve my goal in life the most productively at the moment?
  • what holds the most meaning for me now, and the future?
  • where am I now and where do I want to be?
  • what is my present circumstances?
  • my vision statement for the future?
  • impact of my value statement, priorities, ethics and mission in life?
  • influence on the legacy statement I am attempting to establish?
  • etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. and again etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
The above question examples may uncontrollably rush through our minds on conscious, sub-conscious and unconscious awareness levels, and when we fail to efficiently calibrate our mindset (i.e. channel our thinking/reasoning energies), the resulting "uncontrolled energy surges" often have an unproductive outcome... we either fail our test/exam, are rejected by our peers or both. This mainly happens because we fail to "transform our stress energies" into the setting of realistic and obtainable short, medium and long term goals; properly digest environmental information; prioritize our present reference structure; identify realistic time-lines; setting of feasible mile stones; determine our life strategy and a personal "development plan".

When we fail to restore our psyche equilibrium, we frequently opt for an illusion of balance in life by blaming it on our parent(s), the circumstances, use some chemical substance to "suppress the pain" of conflict or inner dualities, develop an addiction, depend on divine forces, call on supernatural beings for protection, ...etc. Thus, to regain our psyche equilibrium and control in life again, we need to transform our stress energies and channel it into more productive means such personal goals, learning objectives, learning strategies and/or a social plan.

Emotional maturity is the ultimate state of psyche equilibrium that we all strive for, when we have to constantly deal with the many duality's of our umwelt to productively balance the psyche "forces" of Victim/Martyr (i.e. Wild Horse attitude) with the psyche "forces" of Survivor/Witness (i.e. Oryx attitude).
Equilibrium is the result of the RIPPLE effect, and is destroyed by the DOMINO effect!
